childhood’s villain

Father used his fists
a lot
Though never on the kids

On the walls
and the furniture
and the doors
and the mailbox
and the fence
and the neighbors
and random people on the street
and strangers in the bar
and a few times the poor dog
and one time on mother

He was the childhood’s
villain

To defeat him one had
to become a hero

and becoming a hero
took time

And today
after all this time
the villain of childhood
was dead

He died at the hands of
some other character,
a neutral one

A cop who told him to
drop to the ground
and father didn’t
so he got shot

That was it
The end of his saga

Utterly unsatisfactory
anticlimactic
disappointing
just bad

There was no final showdown
between hero and villain

because those things
only happen in
childhood
and childhood had ended a
long time ago

  1. Good to see that you’ve ended it on a stark realty. We are the villains and the heroes.
Childhood is a time when everything looks bigger and grander. Maybe because of the immaturity.
But tough childhoods often leave us with nothing but harsh realty. Nothing childish about this. 🙂

    1. Indeed, some childhoods are darker than others, and some can barely be called childhoods, but no matter how they are, they all have a touch of magic.
It’s what helps their subjects get to the next day and make sense of senseless things.
(∩ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )⊃━☆゚ Many childhoods play out exactly like reading a novel in the magical realism genre (for better or worse).

  2. A child’s mind ..pure and unadulterated…understands them all..the villains and the heroes…the good and the bad…forms opinions though hardly expresses..
All of us have our heroes and villains…some villains die some live with us..some live in us..

    Very well articulated..

    1. (っ˘̩ ╭╮˘̩)っ Thanks!

It’s true, they never leave our memories. And we shouldn’t strive to forget them, rather we should seek to create new memories. Pleasant ones this time. No matter what happened in the past, or where we come from, we have the power to create new memories that are so nice they totally eclipse the bad ones 🙂

  3. My father was always glad to knock me around. He did it quite regularly, and would always find a reason even though there wasn’t a real one. There’s never a true reason for hurting anyone….especially children!

    1. He’s still a hero

But if he can bring himself to forgive the villain… he’ll be a hero as well as a saint
