Of course

predators don’t always murder their

prey

Many times they will just

catch something

for fun and then

release it

and revel in the godlike feeling of having

allowed a creature infinitely

to live

“My cat brought me a mouse,” she said. “Held him

cats do, they sometimes bring

you game

like a trophy

or to show appreciation for taking care

of them, allowing them to live

in your house. Well, mine brought

this cute little mouse

and guess what,

the mouse is still in my room to this day

but the cat is not. I don’t

know what happened to

her. She went out and never

returned. It’s been a month and a half. And

it hurts all the more. That cat

goth maid outfit

‘You’re going to be
the prettiest girl at the
funeral,’
he wanted to tell her
as he watched
that dark outfit that
resembled a maid for sorts

but it wouldn’t be
an appropriate thing to say
when the funeral was
for her father

Not that she displayed a lot of grief
either. She was more concerned
with the goth maid outfit
and how it would look on her

“My daddy would love to see
me in this,” she said

And then
her boyfriend said, “Who
wouldn’t?”

She eyed him from
across the room
and said, “My mom... Eh, but to
hell with her. If I’d listened
to her, I’d be a nun
now. In fact, if I weren’t an
adult able to make decisions
for myself right now, I’m sure
she would’ve arranged for me to
go to some monastery or something
like that, wherever nuns go.
And she dares wonder why I
reserved all my love for daddy and
gave her nothing. Every time
we’d get close
she’d get in the way. If I didn’t know
better I’d say she’s the
entity behind his death, really.
My daddy was a loving
man, this I know for sure. He was
all good and I... I miss
him so much already. I just wish
I could... Wait!”

“What?”

“I got an idea.”

He didn’t like the tone
with which she said
that, nor the grin
on her face
as she reached into her bosom
and pulled out her phone

He had many questions
for her
but there was no time
to ask. She moved in and grabbed
his hand and dragged him
along,
out of the room and long
the corridor
all the way to the room where
her father sat in the
casket awaiting to be
taken to the grave

“Here, hold this,” she said
as she handed him her phone

Wordlessly
she climbed onto the casket
and stretched herself
along her father’s body
“C’mon,” she said, “take a few
pictures.”

Her boyfriend did. When you have
too many questions assaulting
you at once, you
give voice to none, just
play along

The funeral that followed
was a short one, with
few mourners

The loudest cry came from
the wife of the departed
after some unknown number sent
the pictures to her
phone

Bleed ’em to death by Bogdan Dragos

"Eh, sorry, sorry," she would
say
but the wound would be already
open

She would close her eyes
squint them
poke her tongue out
and shake her head
"Sorry."

She liked to bite
couldn't help it

"You're gonna kill somebody
one day. Bleed 'em to death or
something."

"Sorry, sorry."

but some people
some girls
are just impossible to stay mad at

Despite her words
there was
no remorse for opening the wound
no remorse for licking it
making it bigger with her tongue
And no remorse for sucking
the blood out of it

She never swallowed
Just swirled it around her mouth,
loving the saltiness
and the taste of metal,
and then let it drip down her chin

She was arguably
one of the
greatest
among the great ones

the bus seat creaked and roared

with protest

as he sat down

He ignored it

and looked out the window

It won’t be that long of a journey

but it’ll be the

most painful one

He was going home

After all the years spent chasing dreams

“So, have you made it?” they will ask

“Made it?” he’ll say. “Didn’t you see I

came here by bus? Does that

look to you like I made it? Does

that scream ‘Bestselling Author’ to you?”

But of course

they’ll just ask to be nice

or to make conversation

or simply as a means to

reaffirm their ‘I told you!’

Or maybe even to mock

It was 18:22 by the time the bus

arrived at his stop

He didn’t get out

From 09:00 to 18:22

it’s a lot of time to think

about all you haven’t thought about

in 26 years

the woman smiled at him
and showed her
legs from beneath a
white coat

She was close to his face

Stretched on the label of
the rubbing alcohol bottle

70% alcohol

He liked this woman because her
smile never faded
and she was always inviting

"Oh, if you insist," he said
and made an
effort to push himself away from the
moldy pillow and stand

He grabbed the bottle
added some water
stirred
held his breath
and drank

The words "I love you," came from his mouth
enveloped in thick steam

and there was a brutal
growl in his guts

but none of that
mattered. The woman was still
smiling at him, still
lovely

The Matters of the Living are Beyond Her Now by Bogdan Dragos

The Matters of the Living are Beyond Her Now by Bogdan Dragos

dead and unfazed

217 days
without speaking
or seeing each other
and suddenly she shows up
knocks on his door and says,
“Hey, we’re still together, right?
Still a couple?”

He didn’t answer,
just ushered her in
through a curtain of smoke
and moldy smells.
His small apartment
looked more like a cave
than ever before.
The walls were dark and irregular
with buildup of grime.

The cockroaches were long dead,
poisoned with cigarette smoke
and ashes

26 years her senior,
he was a modern caveman
Still lived in a cold, dark,
and gross cave,
but he had a laptop
and internet connection.

The screen
was the only thing
alive in the cave.

It showed a compilation
of short videos
featuring brutal executions
from all around the world.

“So how have you been?”
she asked.

His reply was a grunt
as his gnarled hand
reached into his breast pocket

a very skilled assassin by Bogdan Dragos

The way she'd creep up on you and just appear from behind like some cat, you'd think she was some trained assassin or something I felt her punch my shoulder and then her other hand falling on my nape and squeezing "Hey, lucky boy. You should be so damn glad you ran into me." In the fist that hit my shoulder she held a bunch of crumpled bills and brought them before my eyes "What's that?" I said "Our tickets to the bar down the street. And you've the honor to accompany me there. Drinks are on me today. But you do owe me, don't think otherwise, okay?" "Where'd you get that money?" I asked. "Why's it so dirty?" "I stole 'em from Ol' Horn Nose while he was taking a shit." "What?" Ol' Horn Nose was the homeless guy who roamed around the block, usually begging in front of…

but hell was just a floor below

in the living room

There was a blazing fire

in the fireplace

and there were plenty of screams

coming from mother and father

They argued again

And from upstairs, locked in her

dim room, she knew that

the gnashing of teeth and the shattering

of glass would not be late

in echoing through the walls

They always liked to break glasses

and bottles in the fireplace

while arguing

The fireplace was full of

sparkling shards now

She still remembered the afternoon

her little cousin came to

visit with aunt and uncle and not knowing

any better he tried to pick

the sparkling treasure from the

cold ashes of the fireplace

and cut himself pretty

bad

But who knows,

perhaps there really was a treasure in

Somehow they
