the bus seat creaked and roared

with protest

as he sat down

He ignored it

and looked out the window

It won’t be that long of a journey

but it’ll be the

most painful one

He was going home

After all the years spent chasing dreams

“So, have you made it?” they will ask

“Made it?” he’ll say. “Didn’t you see I

came here by bus? Does that

look to you like I made it? Does

that scream ‘Bestselling Author’ to you?”

But of course

they’ll just ask to be nice

or to make conversation

or simply as a means to

reaffirm their ‘I told you!’

Or maybe even to mock

It was 18:22 by the time the bus

arrived at his stop

He didn’t get out

From 09:00 to 18:22

it’s a lot of time to think

about all you haven’t thought about

in 26 years

  1. I love this poem. I may sound like an old woman but I am just a bit older than the you in this poem(35). I remember this feeling so innately. All I can say is some years pass in a blink while others stretch eons full of opportunity. Find your breaks where you can, be open to new paths and keep writing. You’ll find where you’re meant to be.

At one time, writing paid my bills. I wasn’t rich, but I was comfortable. Now I do something else that provides inspiration and a better life for me so that I can freely adhere to my muses pestering me as I see fit. I like this better now.

This would have felt like failure 10 years ago though.

    1. Exactly! ( ๑>ᴗ<๑ )

Some will feel it earlier than others. Some will feel it for longer than others. And that's all right. All versions are alright, except for the one who feels it all the time…

  2. The lesson I learnt is to discover no-one could care less about writing, nor who was doing it but I appreciated always being politely asked how it was going! Even if the answer almost choked me! Such a good poem.
